Excavating Peterloo

  • Museum of Science and Industry Liverpool Rd Manchester, M3 4FP United Kingdom (map)

Part of Manchester Science Festival.

The Peterloo Massacre of August 16th 1819 now forms part of the story of the struggle for democracy in Britain. Although much has been written historically about this event, until recently the archaeological story was little explored. This talk looks at the recent archaeological dig on the Hulme Barracks, home of the Hussars who rode out to St Peter's Field that day, and puts the building of the cavalry barracks in the context of Manchester’s growth as an industrial city by looking at the recent excavations of workers’ houses and textile mills in the late Georgian period.
